Xu Zhonghao was one of the most famous military leaders in Chinese history. He served as the commander-in-chief of the Manchu army during the Battle of Liaoning, which took place on December 16, 1894.

Xu Zhonghao was born into a wealthy family and was educated at the Qing imperial court. In 1851, he joined the Manchu army and became a general under the command of General Li Hongzhang.
